Children’s Theater Script: Eleven Dancing Princesses

Once upon a time, I was teaching summer theater camp at the Boys’ & Girls’ Club. I was working with a whole lot of restrictions that year: the production had to be put on by 1st-3rd graders, had to be fairy tale themed, had to have room for the dance camp to do a dance in it, and had to have speaking roles for eleven girls and two boys.

It probably goes without saying that it was easier to write my own script than to find one that met our requirements. I also find lots of kids scripts too “cutesy”, and I wanted something that felt a little more “traditional fairy tale”. I also opted for a happy ending because, you know. First graders.

When we performed this, we had lots of nervous kids, so I was the narrator. The old lady was double cast as a princess. Go wild! Do whatever works!
